There is a tremendous amount of battery r&d taking place. New breakthroughs are announced on a regular basis. Some of these announcements go nowhere while others might become commercially available 5 years in the future. This article is about one such technology that could lower the high cost of batteries. The 18650 batteries we currently use for our e-Bikes are very expensive and have an energy density of 217 wh/kg. Compare this to the 90 wh/kg of this prototype Na-Ion battery. If this battery is produced at a low cost it will find a niche. However, it will need a higher energy density to be attractive for electric vehicles. A cell like this could be used today for off-grid solar where cost is important, while weight and energy density are less so. Exciting times my friends!
